Discovering Your Style & Attracting Dream Clients

Are you feeling lost and uninspired?

This industry can be overwhelming and it’s so easy to lose site of who you are as a brand and an artist. As someone who has been through this, I'd love to share some encouragement with you.

Whoever you’re telling yourself you are, you will eventually become and if it doesn’t feel authentic to yourself, you will get lost. Don’t let the trends override who you are as a business owner and what feels authentic to you.

When I first started photography, I tried to be the bubbly, adventure-seeking photographer that would hike for hours to get to the perfect waterfall location. There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things, except that they didn't feel like me. I ended up feeling burnt out and uninspired. But when I started leaning into a more relaxed style, a brand that felt inviting and calm, but still relational and fun, I started working with clients that I loved.

Which leads me to my next point: you don’t have to be the right photographer for every client.

Everyone doesn’t need to like your work. In fact, don’t be afraid to repel some people. It means you’re taking risks and putting yourself out there. You will attract people that you want to be working with when you show your true preferences and style. You'll stand out amongst others and connect with clients that are the best fit for you.

Since you don’t need to connect with every client, it’s important to remember that being busy does not equate to being successful. It’s so much better to have quality clients rather than a large quantity of bookings. Take on jobs and clients that you feel connected to.

This can be easier said than done. How do you figure out what your style truly is? How do you know if a client is the right fit?

I’d be lying if I didn’t say trial and error, but there’s also a few questions you can consider to make the process easier.

Ask yourself:

  • What kind of clients do I get excited about working with?
  • How do I want to be described by my clients?
  • What stresses me out about working with people?
  • What about my style feels like a trend vs. what feels like me?
  • If you could have full creative control over a project, what would it look like?
  • Who do I look up to and why?

Actually take time to sit and write out your answers, then build your brand and style around these answers. Even if you and I have similar styles, the way we go about presenting ourselves might be different. There’s no one-size fits all, and everyone brings their unique individualities to the table. Find what works for you and see how leaning into your authentic style can fill you with inspiration and attract the clients that are right for you.
